MY BAKELITE LECTURE/TALK is now available !!! Includes exhibits, slide show, handouts and much much more.. please
contact me for full details, see below .. many people have already enjoyed the fun world of Bakelite... these include
the Havering Antiques and Collectors Club, The Yorkshire Clarice Cliff Group and Ann Zierold Art Deco Fairs just to name a
few !!! BEING SO VERSATILE BAKELITE COVERS A WIDE SPECTRUM WHICH MIGHT BE JUST THE THING TO FILL ONE OF THE MEETING
DATES IN YOUR CLUB'S CALENDAR OF EVENTS !!!
Two contrasting radios both from 1946 appear below, from either side of the channel !!

Two recent additions to the growing radio side of the collection for 2005,
at opposite ends of the style spectrum I feel.... but both produced just after the war in 1946. One displays all the style
and chic associated with France, a Bakelite bodied Radialva Super AS 110/120volts, shown above... nice wrap around thick
heavy bakelite, very stylish .......,
the other, shown below ..... being a far more austere Amplion ADP1Portable
Battery Receiver, Made in England, the design of which in my opinion still displayed all the aspects of the economic and practical
designs of the war time period. Something about the simplicity of this set I like.
The Amplion used the readily surplus materials available post war, and
the body consisted of Rexine ? I think, covered plywood. I found a ready made excuse to feature this radio
on my site ... the three control knobs are after all phenolic !!! The Amplion featured the then new
range of Octal valves which came onto the market during the same year of production 1946. Without a doubt the
cheapest radio I've purchased to date. Found recently covered in cobwebs at a local fleamarket for £3 !!!!!

Added to the collection February 2005 a Philips 209U small bakelite
radio. ( Pics above and below ).. Nice ribbed styling LW MW and SW, original cost of this set when produced in 1946
was £14.11s 7d including purchase tax. It's nice to find an example with the out of body glass station indicator still intact
at the top of the set. Mains powered, the circuit was actually developed during the early 1940's by Philips and was used into
the 1950's under other brand names taken over and incorporated under the Philips flag. For the technical minded, 4 Loctal
valves, UBL21, two UCH21 ana a UY21 rectifier.

Above a good example of the Sobell Model 439 sometimes known as the Sobellette ...Made around 1949 Medium and Longwave
bands, nice fluted body which reminds me of an old metal radiator, often referred to as the Jelly Mould !! Mottled walnut
bakelite and also was available in four other colours, Blue, Green,Magenta and Peach. Carry handle and often advertised as
fully transportable ...Original cost £9-14-6d which included carriage and insurance.. Purchase tax was then added, another
5 shillings !! Sobell gave a 2 year guarantee with this set, they were so confident of their new baby! 4 valve superhet ..
with the proud claim of having the power of a 5 valve wireless !! Added to the collection March 2005, full working order,
even the dial still illuminates, bottom right of the receiver. A good looking classic piece of bakelite.

Two pictures here of a lovely example of the Kolster Brandes FB 10 Radio. Made in 1950, this classic design radio
is commonly known as " The Toaster " this nickname originates not only from the unique shape of the drop over bakelite casing,
but also from the amount of heat generated by the earlier models !!! Designed by Lawrence Griffin, MW/LW in cream painted
bakelite and Made in England. Working, the original price when new was £8 17s 1d plus Purchase Tax !!

Dating from 1945, below appears a nice Murphy A98 set in Black Bakelite has a beige oriental
fabric panel and is currently the largest and possibly the oldest radio in my collection..

Below appears a photo of one of the latest additions to my collection .. purchased early January
2002, This radio is a Bush BP10 Model, battery operated from 1953...

Below, dating from 1946/47 appears an Ever Ready Model C portable. Battery operated, this elegant radio features a few
unusual points. The cabinet is of a plywood construction with painted wooden side panels. The front curved panel is made of
one sheet of perspex and painted on the inner surface with a clear integral oblong left for viewing the dial !! Another
flatter piece of painted perspex forms the back screw down panel. The use of perspex is very interesting and innovative, war
production of perspex had left a surplus of the material ( used in aircraft cockpits ), and Ever Ready may well have obtained
cheap supplies of it. First released November 1946, the original price was £11-11-0d plus £2 13s 9d for batteries and purchase
tax. Batteries for this radio are now obsolete, but I am investigating alternative methods of hopefully bringing this beauty
back to life .. I found this radio at Chelford Car Boot City, Cheshire... at the superb price of £8.00p!!! Jools.
Thanks are due to Peter Foden for reproduction of the image below>

This nicely designed DERWENT Radio was made just after the war around 1948....for the rental markets .. The photo below
appears by kind permission of Chris at VINTAGERADIOTIMES.COM, an excellent website for radio fans..

Here appears two of my Bush Dac90a radios, late 1940's early 1950s, a cream urea model also appears on my homepage

A further addition to this section, January 2002, was the nice Stella ST110U model radio shown below, dating from around
1959. During the 1950's Philips bought the Stella brand name and added it to their already considerable empire. A nice little
set, the name of which also reminds me of one of my favourite beers !!!... but that's another story ...

Below appears a small compact Murphy U198H maroon Bakelite radio, early 1950's, this set may be small in stature, but
certainly packs a punch with it's output !!!

Above appears a small oblong radio by Pye of England, 1940's

Below a large heavy PHILCO Bakelite Radio model A547B, multi-waveband from the mid 1940's,made in
England.

Below is shown a MARCONIPHONE P17 B portable 4 valve radio dating from 1947... The on off switch
is operated by opening and closing the lid !! This was a recent find on a large carboot, complete with it's original packaging
and instructions, I cannot check if it still works, the battery used now obsolete, ...When purchased new, this
radio cost £13-2-6d plus Purchase Tax !! a hefty sum indeed back in 1947 !!!!

Not long ago I chanced across one of the speakers shown below on a local carboot sale ... Made by Rees Mace possibly during
the 1940's maybe ... a very stylish bakelite speaker.

Below and above appear adverts from the Evening World Publication, November 1924 ...
